Interesting stuff. Good themes. Freedom from slavery. Light in the midst of darkness. Peace and calm in the midst of hustle and bustle. MAJOR themes we need, yet seldom pursue.
I think he nailed it. Typically our advent is spent serving the god Santa Claus. That god drives us to give, give, give (which begins with spend, spend, spend). He sits enthroned in malls and children line up to worship him.
The feeding trough throne of the true King would have no lines. It would probably draw sneers from adults and teens. Very young children would still be draw to it, I think, the wonder and mystery of the kingdom is still alive in them, the world hasn't quenched it fully.
Aside from radically separating from the world and creating whole new communities (communes?), I am not sure how Christians realistically can confront in the way that Williams urges. How do we truly embrace that calm and that peace and that reflection? We can certainly do so personally and in our families, but how does that become a movement that finally turns the idols on their heads???
Perhaps I need to pursue the quiet first... hmmm....
